Genealogy Blog addendum July 29, 2006

This should be a comment to my previous entry… but I wanted to first see if Trackback works for me. Not yet it hasn’t. Maybe Lorelle has to approve the comment…. When I looked on her blog; she’s already gotten further. AND it demonstrates the difference between a designer (Lorelle) and a stylist ( yours truly). I can hardly believe you will be interested in A List Apart: Articles: The Bathing Ape Has No Clothes (and other notes on the distinction between style and design) , please let me know if you actually read the article. It is not for the faint-hearted.

Lorelle’s blog has a few things in common with mine. We both use WordPress; and we’re both interested in Genealogy. She’s planning a new blog devoted to Genealogy and has written about it. Very interesting. Of her 10 plan points, I ignored all but 3 of the 10 (I use WordPress) 3/4 (I use Bluehost). 1/6/9/10 shouldn’t be a problem. 5 is important and something I talked about in MY first blog entry. I first wrestled with multiuser/DBaccess in the early ’70’s at IBM; it is no small problem. Which leaves 7/8. They probably explain why the Genealogy part of my blog has been relatively unsuccessful. Expecting (nonGeek) family members, more interested in the Genealogy-result than supplying data, to spontaneously contribute, IS ASKING TOO MUCH. Perhaps the key is to make it so friendly, they can’t resist. In addition to being computerShy, perhaps the typical family member has concern for supplying personal information to the Internet. So I’ll be real interested in how/if Lorelle addresses these aspects. Albeit, I have ASSumed that a generic blog such as mine, could be a Genealogy Blog.
This post to my log will be my first attempt at using Trackback. Hmm, no trackback control in WP except title in published example Guess I have to publish it first then apply Lorelles trackback info to that…??? . It was way down at the bottom; and you MUST apply link BEFORE you publish. Guess I should have looked for help first… This is a great introduction to weblog terms for web-log readers. I use Lorelle’s RSS feed on MyYahoo to monitor her writing. (comic relief: the WordPress spell checker does not recognise the word blog !!)
Damn Schroon Lake Info… July 25, 2006

from the Spring Issue of the Paradox Lake Association Newsletter
After two weeks of almost constant rain, I am very excited to report that I believe the new Starbuckville Dam (south of Schroon Lake on the Schroon River in Warren County) is going to make an enormous difference to Paradox Lake water levels. After as much rain as we received in early May, the water level in Paradox Lake should have been another two to three feet higher than it was. Sure, it was high, but not as high as it would have been with the old dam. To verify my hunch, I called Joe Koch in Adirondack. Joe is one of the commissioners and has been involved with trying to get permits and funding for the new dam for well over eight years. It was finally built last summer and, for the first time replaces, the old dam during the heavy spring rains.
Formerly, someone would have to go down to the dam and open the 16-foot gate by hand. It took almost a half a day to get the gate open. The new spillway is 51 feet longer than the old spillway, and there are two 14-foot gates for a total of 28 feet of gate rather than the single 16-foot gate we used to have. Not only that, but one of the gates is totally automatic and takes only 15 minutes to open instead of half a day. The second gate, while not automatic, can also be opened in 15 minutes. Joe tells me that they are discussing making the second gate automatic as well. The impact for us in Paradox is that Schroon River floodwaters will not back up into Paradox as much as they did. The river will be flushed through Schroon Lake much more rapidly and thus will not rise as high as it did formerly when flushing water out at the South end of Schroon was much slower and more difficult. When Paradox Lake does experience a rise in water level, it will also fall much more quickly.

Came here Friday, leave today; were hoping Carolyn would have a baby this weekend, but guess we’ll have to wait for August 5th.
Tim had a good animal story. While circling a local wildlife area at 30mph with the passenger window open, he was startled when a passing duck came thru the window and wound up down by the break pedal. Tim kept control, stopped the car, and opened the passenger door for the grand exit. Carolyn said the duck must have had much less control…. as Tim was quite busy with paper towel and water when he got back home.
Small world. We went over to Paula’s for hamburgers yesterday in Colchester, Conn. Last night I was trying to restart reading a book Washington’s Spys. The first chapter is about Nathan Hale. Turns out he was from Colchester! The author thought he probably didn’t actually say “I regret I’ve but one life to give for my country”; as this was a quote from some play by Cato; which Hale’s friend says Hale read while attend Yale. Carolyn says there’s a Hale house in Colchester, must look it up next time I’m over there…
Bleeding Navy Blue by Christopher R. Smith July 10, 2006

In general, I don’t like science fiction. My preference is for mystery. One exception is “time travel”. I especially like Umberto Eco’s Name of the Rose. There was another nice “travel back to Medieval time; and don’t screwup the timeline” book; but BriefSM; I can remember neither author or Title. And now for another tease that has mystery and TT. I haven’t yet finished this book by Chris Smith; but since it too starts out so great, I thought I’d mention it… Bleeding Navy Blue. Time bangs back from the future with the first time tactical use of an impressive new weapon in the Navy Seal’s arsenal…. Sorry; I’ve got to go finish the book…
And I will finish it before my sister goes back to Buffalo this month: she MUST carry back her Grandson’s FIRST copy of his FIRST novel; as she certainly would not entrust it to the USPS.
further update: I was so busy with Jean, Jerry and then Bill & Robin; that I only got to page 120. Jean took the book back to Buffalo, so now I’ve got to order one to see how the story ends… It is a rather interesting yarn.
