It’s been so long since I’ve updated the blog, I’ve forgot how!! Over 2 years. Two big events have been 4/2007 trip to Scotland; and a kitchen additon at Schroon Lake. My Muir ancestors were from Sanday in Orkney………. a bit of travelog is here. [make sure you adjust the time between slides; and increase the max image size…… (to whatever is bearable.. ;)

I went nuts taking pictures of expansion in the fall; from Start to Middle of the 3 month construction…

This summer we haven’t done much… besides enjoy the Lake and our new Kitchen…

A recent comment by Tom Keating asked me about the effects of the dam finished in 2007. Well, I don’t know much about it… or even know Joe Koch. A careful read of my original post notes that it was an (interesting) exerpt FROM a Paradox Lake Newsletter… wish I knew more; I can only offer this link to a short 2008 video of the dam. —- murph.us/StarBuckDamn.avi
Tom, I hope the growth you noted is not the Eurasian Millfoil sweeping the lake!!

[When I figure out the proper way to host the short video, I fix it.....]

I can’t believe it’s been so long since I last wrote here… been so busy!! I should have at least written about the great mini-cruise we had in October. The pictures are in the Gallery. Another new album there is “Old Christmas’”. I have a few pics alread up there; and plan on adding more shortly. I’m converting old slides to digital… and it sure takes time. But the old pics are facinateing. I haven’t seen some of these slides in a loooong time. Some pics were put in “old wine” album.
Can’t remember if I’ve mentioned new Fr. Harold page. That was an interesting, satisfying effort.
Trying to get back in the writing habit..

Trying to improve the blog looks, tain’t easy.

Testing with green on green.. :) Trying to enlarge the font here; I think it’s hard to read. Not easy in Worpress.Com. Think I have to try a fresh post and figure out how to “turn off the Visual Rich Editor.. !!

Well I got green on blue………

I changed the Links a little. Hover your mouse over them to see (hopefully helpful) comments. And for all you folks who visited us at Schroon Lake, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the new Adirondack Stuff link. Over to the right, and down… And take a look at his LONG list of Adirondack Links/Sites/Blogs… or whatever they are.

Some stats from my Genealogy data base:

Rationals, Cantor, ALEPH August 30, 2006

The Mystery of the ALEPH, Mathematics, the Kabbalah, and the Search for Infinity. by Amir D. Aczel.

I picked up the book on one of Barnes & Nobel’s elCheapo bargain tables for only $7.99. It was a real buy as I thourghly enjoyed the entire read. The central theme was infinity and it’s place in Mathematics History from Greek times through the present. Brief descriptions of the contributions of many important mathematicians are woven together with emphasis on basic principles, and especially the contributions and tribulations of Georg Cantor. The author makes a good case that “the intensity of actual infinity” caused Godel, Cantor and perhaps others to descend “into madness from the intense introspection that studying the continuum hypothesis entailed.” I had never understood that there were multiple orders of infinity.

I liked the review of classifying numbers (and their understanding through history): integers, reals, irrationals, etc. I was particularly taken with the ideas on pages 111-113 where he talks about the countablility of integers and rationals. Cantor’s Diagonalization Proof of the Denumerability of Rational numbers. For the hell of it entered the “infinite” “table” of rational numbers on page 112 to an Excel spreadsheet. It helped me see the relations between some fractions and “repeating decimal” numbers… (I’ve always been taken with the fact that such very common fractions (eg. 1/7 (.285714….) have a small number of digits that repeat for ever) )
I will be amazed if somebody both reads this esoteric Blog entry AND takes the trouble to look at this spreadsheet. Ah, the journey of it all….

Damn Schroon Lake Info… July 25, 2006

from the Spring Issue of the Paradox Lake Association Newsletter

After two weeks of almost constant rain, I am very excited to report that I believe the new Starbuckville Dam (south of Schroon Lake on the Schroon River in Warren County) is going to make an enormous difference to Paradox Lake water levels. After as much rain as we received in early May, the water level in Paradox Lake should have been another two to three feet higher than it was. Sure, it was high, but not as high as it would have been with the old dam. To verify my hunch, I called Joe Koch in Adirondack. Joe is one of the commissioners and has been involved with trying to get permits and funding for the new dam for well over eight years. It was finally built last summer and, for the first time replaces, the old dam during the heavy spring rains.

Formerly, someone would have to go down to the dam and open the 16-foot gate by hand. It took almost a half a day to get the gate open. The new spillway is 51 feet longer than the old spillway, and there are two 14-foot gates for a total of 28 feet of gate rather than the single 16-foot gate we used to have. Not only that, but one of the gates is totally automatic and takes only 15 minutes to open instead of half a day. The second gate, while not automatic, can also be opened in 15 minutes. Joe tells me that they are discussing making the second gate automatic as well. The impact for us in Paradox is that Schroon River floodwaters will not back up into Paradox as much as they did. The river will be flushed through Schroon Lake much more rapidly and thus will not rise as high as it did formerly when flushing water out at the South end of Schroon was much slower and more difficult. When Paradox Lake does experience a rise in water level, it will also fall much more quickly.

Came here Friday, leave today; were hoping Carolyn would have a baby this weekend, but guess we’ll have to wait for August 5th.

Tim had a good animal story. While circling a local wildlife area at 30mph with the passenger window open, he was startled when a passing duck came thru the window and wound up down by the break pedal.  Tim kept control, stopped the car, and opened the passenger door for the grand exit.  Carolyn said the duck must have had much less control…. as Tim was quite busy with paper towel and water when he got back home.

Small world. We went over to Paula’s for hamburgers yesterday in Colchester, Conn.  Last night I was trying to restart reading a book Washington’s Spys. The first chapter is about Nathan Hale.  Turns out he was from Colchester! The author thought he probably didn’t actually say “I regret I’ve but one life to give for my country”; as this was a quote from some play by Cato; which Hale’s friend says Hale read while attend Yale.  Carolyn says there’s a Hale house in Colchester, must look it up next time I’m over there…

Well, here ’tis:

Mine’s Wine

Mind’s whine
Mine’s Wine
All’s Fine

I crafted this in the late ’90s. I’m sure I wrote it down, but have not yet found it.. I suspect there was a fourth line, but it’s not yet recalled.

Found a note dated 12/6/96

`Keepsie Storm

Mind’s Whine

Weather’s Fine

Mine’s Wine

Day’s Fine

Now, 12 years later, I think it needs some more work; but I still like it!!
